Although target-specific marketing is relatively new, the practice continues to expand in importance. Increases in the size of ethnic groups, more defined regionalism, gender parity and age disparity make traditional broad-spectrum advertising less effective and more expensive. In a multicultural society, questions such as "What is an average family?", "Who is the head of the household?" and "Who is my customer?" no longer have black and white answers. When using narrow casting strategies, new questions such as "What family do I want to reach?", "What type of household head do I need?" and "Which customer am I trying to satisfy?" are created.
